Detail Itinerary
Catch your flight from Dar es salaam airport to Selous (14h30/15h15) on your scheduled light aircraft flight to Kiba airstrip in the Selous Game Reserve. On arrival at the airstrip you will be met and driven the short distance to Sand Rivers, where you stay for the next 3 nights.
The Selous Game Reserve is the largest protected tract of wilderness in Africa, home to the continent’s greatest populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and one of the world’s last remaining concentrations of wild dog and black rhino. There are also more than 450 bird and 2000 plant species to be found here. This 52,000 sq. km of stunning diversity has also been designated a World Heritage Site.
Tucked into the banks of the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers is the most remote and luxurious lodge in the Selous with a unique style allowing you absolute flexibility as to how to spend your days. Here you can glimpse Africa at its most undisturbed, as it was in the 19th Century when the hunter, explorer and naturalist Frederick Selous cast his eyes across the same landscape. You have the rest of the morning at leisure to relax in the camp before heading out after lunch by vehicle or boat to explore the magnificent Selous.
Overnight at Sand Rivers on full board basis.
Day 2 & 3 - Selous
You have another day of game walks, game drives, boat trips and relaxed sundowners in the Selous Game Reserve. The scenery of the Selous is stunningly varied with grassy plains, open woodland and thick
forest, whilst stemming from the mighty Rufiji River are myriad channels, lakes and swamps that form one of the most outstanding ecological habitats in East Africa. The many intricate waterways and tributaries attract large herds of elephant and plains game, as well as a mass of water birds. Crocodile and hippo pack the waterways, whilst the reserve boasts Africa’s largest buffalo population, as well as many zebra, impala, Nyassa wildebeest and Liechtenstein’s hartebeest. There are also greater kudu, sable, eland and numerous Masai giraffe, whose southernmost border is the Rufiji River. Lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog are all present in the reserve in varying numbers.
Overnight at Sand Rivers on full board basis.
Day 4 - Zanzibar
This morning you will be transferred back to the airstrip for your scheduled Coastal Air light aircraft flight to Zanzibar. The flight departs at 09h45 and arrives in Zanzibar at 10h50. On arrival at Zanzibar Airport please proceed through the local Immigration formalities. You will then be met by our representatives and transferred to The Zanzibar Serena Inn in Stone Town where you stay for the next 2 nights.
This beautiful hotel nestling on the seafront is the perfect introduction to Zanzibar. Located in the heart of Stone Town it is easy to explore the bustling markets, narrow streets, restaurants and museums from the hotel. The rooms are all air-conditioned and have magnificent ocean views over the Indian Ocean and the swimming pool.
