Overview
of Mauritius

Mauritius is a volcanic and
mountainous island situated in the Indian
Ocean 1240 miles off the coast of southeastern
Africa. It gained its independence from UK
in 1968. The official language is English.
Other languages spoken on the island are
French, Creole, Hindi and Chinese. The currency
is called the Mauritian Rupee.The climate
of Mauritius is warm between January to April
and its breezy all year round. The cyclone
season is generally between November to
February.
Mauritius has been influenced
by many cultures and has been called the
pearl of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by
brightly coloured tropical sea, enchanted
by golden beaches, covered with swaying fields
of sugar cane, with a wealth of forests full
of wonderful birds such as dodo and solitaire,
kinds or wingless pigeons.
Endless gardens
of coral populated by countless variety
of fish bombard the eye. The reef constitute
one of the most fascinating pieces of scenery
in the world and support a multitude of
life, in a kaleidoscope of colours. Pearls
come from shells and although these shells
have no pearls, the shells here are world
famous and have been used as food, jewelry
and ornaments. |
