Lamu Palace Hotel
This is a fairly
large hotel situated
on the waterfront.
The advantages of
this hotel are its
proximity to downtown
Lamu and the fact
that most of the
rooms have air conditioning
throughout. It has
a Lamu style décor.
There is a restaurant
with an extentsive
menu. You get free
transfers to Manda
Beach Club for leisure
and sunbathing and
has wonderful views
of the dunes of Shela.

Kijani House
Kijani House is a
first-class hotel
on Lamu Island.
On arrival on Lamu
Island, you will
be transferred
by a dhow, an only
form of transportation
to Shela (a 3 kilometre
ride). Most dhows
are constructed
from mangrove and
mahogany with towering
handmade sails
and are powered
by the strong coastal
wind and some are
motorized. Along
the way, you will
pass Lamu Town
where one can see
the Persian-influenced
architecture in
the old stone buildings
with their massive
carved thresholds,
built close together
so the streets
are cool despite
the midday heat,
like an Arab souk.
Ideally located
within walking
distance of both
Lamu town and Shela
Beach, Kijani House,
comprises the best
of traditional
local architecture
terraced around
two swimming pools
and gardens of
dripping orange
and pink bougainvillea.
Each of the ten
rooms has a veranda
roofed in makuti,
the traditional
method of mounting
plaited coconut
fronds on a wooden
frame. Inside the
rooms, white mosquito
nets veil carved
mahogany four-poster
beds. |

Peponi Hotel
The hotel is right
at the water’s
edge in Shela
Village, a few
kilometers walk,
or a pleasant
20-minute dhow
ride from Lamu
Town. Part of
the appeal of
staying at Peponi
is arriving by
water. Most guests
fly to Lamu Airstrip
on Manda Island
and then board
the hotel’s
large wooden
dhow. You are
dazzled by the
whitewashed terraces,
blazing bougainvillea,
and tall waving
palm fronds.
There are 25
rooms, all with
private verandah
and pleasant
views. The rooms
are en-suite
and equipped
with fans. Other
facilities include
a dining room,
bar. The hotel
is closed in
May and June.
